Resources

This list is by no means comprehensive, but it is a great starting point to find out more about gifted kids, sensory kids, and alternative education.  If you have a great resource that you would like me to add, please let me know!

Websites

SENG
This site is an amazing starting place.  They have tons of articles, resources, and webinars that explore lots of the issues facing gifted populations.  They also have an annual conference in the summer.

Lots and lots of resources, definitions, and even a special section for kids and teens.

This organization does a lot in the way of advocating for profoundly gifted youth.  Profoundly gifted students may apply to become a "Davidson Young Scholar" which provides for a ton of free services to help support gifted students.  This site also has a ton of resources.

More resources and a forum where you can find lots of support and information.  This site also has a good deal of information on Twice Exceptional students.

Awesome site that explains in greater detail information related to Sensory Processing Disorder.

Lots of additional information on SPD, how it is diagnosed, and possible treatments.  Super helpful information and easy layout.

Books

I can't say enough about how much this book has changed my perception of mental illness and issues related to giftedness.  Although it is quite possible for a child to be both gifted and have a DSM diagnosis, it is imperative that you first understand how giftedness often looks like other diagnoses.

This was the first book I read after my daughter was assessed.  Not only did I see my daughter in the descriptions, but I also saw myself.  Very validating and healing.

This is an excellent parenting book for anyone who struggles with an emotionally intense child.  It is also great if you find that you can often be an emotionally intense parent!

This is a wonderful book for children that explains the brain.  I love it for gifted children because it does a remarkable job of explaining how making mistakes actually helps the brain to grow... which is an important lesson for kids who have a tendency to become very perfectionistic and fear failure.

This book tackles the huge subject of executive skills.  It helps parents to identify their children's strengths as well as areas needing of assistance.  Lots of practical advice.

One of the first books to really understand SPD and its challenges

Another excellent book about executive functioning skills.
